US Census Info and the Need for Health Insurance

United States Health Insurance Statistics

Health insurance in the US has always been a sensitive subject. Health insurance is commonly viewed as a possession that a person or family cannot live without. Many times you will hear of a person quitting a job and the first question asked is; "What are you going to do about health insurance?". What is it about health insurance that is such a big deal? Doctor visits are relatively cheap and usually few and far between. It must be the bigger things like childbirths and catastrophic accidents. Those few things are very major incidents and to suffer one or both without health insurance and catastrophic coverage could be devastating.

The following are some insurance statistics provided by the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • 84.3% of the US population is covered by some form of health insurance
  • 84.3% of the US is about 245.3 Million people
  • Although the number of insured people in the US goes up every year, so does the number of uninsured (This is possible due the increasing number of immigrants and children born every year)
  • The percentage of people without health insurance coverage did not change between 2003 and 2004
  • The number of people insured by government programs however, did increase from 26.6% to 27.2%

In conclusion health insurance in the US changes very little. The influx of people into the US is increasing. Many of these people do not have health insurance.
